What is a Customs Broker?

A customs broker is an import professional licensed by the U.S. Department of Treasury, who must be thoroughly knowledgeable in U.S. Customs Service regulations, tariff schedules and amendments made through frequent changes in customs law and regulations. In dealing with Customs and Border Protection, a customs broker must be aware of potential problems involving import shipments.  This includes cargo handling, appraisement, exchange rates, and the many regulations concerning the calculation of duty.

Customs brokers also help clients choose modes of transportation and appropriate carriers, requiring analysis of a complex, vast amount of information.Customs brokers also help importers in assigning shipments the best and most cost efficient routes, based on estimates for landed costs, payment of goods through draft, letters of credit, insurance and restrictions.
